Innovation

Designing Learning for the Future
At the Environmental Charter School, innovation is both a commitment and a catalyst. As a public charter school, we embrace the flexibility and responsibility to pilot bold ideas, experiment with new models of teaching and learning, and cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships with local organizations, thought leaders, and communities - collaborations that not only enrich student learning but also strengthen the broader ecosystem of public education.
Innovation at ECS is not confined to a single program or initiative - it’s embedded in everything we do, from the way we design our learning environments to the way we engage with the world beyond our walls. Our buildings are living systems that teach sustainability in real time. Our curriculum is interdisciplinary, inquiry-driven, and place-based. And our students are empowered to co-create solutions that matter, developing the skills and mindsets they need to thrive in a complex, changing world.
By serving as a living lab for what’s possible in public education, ECS shares its learning across Pittsburgh and beyond - supporting other schools and organizations as they re-imagine what education can be. Through this work, ECS is not only preparing future-ready citizens who will actively shape a more just, connected, and sustainable future.

Living into Our Values: Environment, Equity and Collaboration
Transform the School Experience
To grow citizens who aspire to make a positive change in the world, students must first feel a deep sense of connection and belonging to it. With joy and curiosity, students explore the Natural, Built and Social environment finding their own personal pathways into issues of sustainability and fostering a sense of responsibility. Through place-based and experiential learning, students gain the knowledge and skills to become active contributors to a better world, realizing their potential for positive change. With a shared commitment to the mission, everyone, from academics to operations, makes decisions that contribute to a more equitable and just world.
Open doors to opportunity.
Connecting all students with experiences and expertise in their community cultivates authentic relationships and valuable networking opportunities, empowering them to thrive and bring a sustainable lens to any future job or field. These real-world connections help students see themselves as capable contributors to any field they choose - from healthcare to construction, from design to data science. With this foundation, they are not only prepared for the future - they are prepared to shape it.
Encourage deeper learning.
From imaginative play as a kindergartener to advocating for issues of sustainability and justice as a senior and everything in between, students are engaged in deep and visible critical and creative thinking. By learning to question assumptions, explore perspectives, and make connections across disciplines, they will be well equipped to be empathic problem solvers and innovators.
Building meaningful collaborations.
From the very beginning, building meaningful collaborations has been a core value and principle for all ECS does. We recognize the power of collective effort and fostering respect, transparent dialogue among students, families, employees and partners.
Our call to action.
Environmental and racial justice efforts cannot be separated.
It is at this intersection that we ask students to develop their identities as change agents. Navigating the complex problems inherent in environmental and equity issues requires a nuanced understanding of how systems interconnect and nimble, solutions-oriented thinking. By preparing students with these skills, they become equipped to drive community empowered change.
